I adore biology, all of it really. I feel it tells us, you are not just a human being, you are part of a greater process that began at the dawn of life from particles of stars and continues in all life like a river. You are a creature of layers and layers organs, tissues, cells, each beautifully complex and astounding, and even then, you are more then the sum of your parts, every living thing is. There is still so much wonder right outside your window, in the xylem of trees, in the cycle that makes the air we breath.

Absolutely … well said.  It’s amazing to think that within us, we carry the living history of all humanity.  We’re deeply connected to this spectacular, three-billion-year-long process of continual growth and change.  I often think to myself, “which is more miraculous?  Being popped into existence by a magical being, or the amazing journey all of our ancestors have gone through to give birth to us, from such humble origins?”  I pick the latter.  And the whole process is driven by love:  the love between romantic partners, parents’ love of their children, the love between siblings, love among friends, and so on.  “Survival of the fittest” is a terrible characterization of evolution’s implications.  Evolution is about love.
