Second Annual A-Day
It’s time again, to spend time with your atheist loved-ones, drink, carouse, or just finally come out to your parents.

You wonder the difference between religion and science? You say they’re both based on “belief”? That may be true - but there is one monumental difference: a scientific theory collapses under disproof (evolution would fail if rabbits were found in the precambrian) - religion never collapses because it can change at any moment. That is, of course, because it isn’t true. Science collapses under disproof because reality itself must be true… stories have no such constraints.
Here’s a news story from North Carolina about a recently-started billboard campaign organized by the FFRF and the Triangle Freethought Society. It’s great to see that these kinds of campaigns are gaining momentum, and getting noticed by local media outlets. Also, the tone and design of these billboards is way better than some others, imo.

Love how the article starts:
If you want to know about God, you might want to talk to an atheist.
Also the following is so beautifully accurate:
So why would an atheist know more about religion than a Christian?
American atheists and agnostics tend to be people who grew up in a religious tradition and consciously gave it up, often after a great deal of reflection and study, said Alan Cooperman, associate director for research at the Pew Forum.
“These are people who thought a lot about religion,” he said. “They’re not indifferent. They care about it.”
Atheists and agnostics also tend to be relatively well educated, and the survey found, not surprisingly, that the most knowledgeable people were also the best educated. However, it said that atheists and agnostics also outperformed believers who had a similar level of education.
A friend of mine sent me this link this morning, and it made me laugh heartily. I especially enjoy the comments at the bottom— given that the article comes from Fox News, I bet you all can guess what they’re like!

“Born Secular” by Jenny Lewis
I was born secular
and inconsolable.
I heard that he walked,
he walked the earth.
And God goes where he wants.
And who knows where he is not?
Not in me.
(#60 on Phil Zuckerman’s top 65 songs for atheists and agnostics)
Non-believers aren’t just old gray-haired guys and boring academics. These secular celebrities also identify as irreligious.
Here’s a quick slide show that includes some celebrities I didn’t realize were non-religious, including Get Him to the Greek star Rose Byrne and musician David Gray.

Please join us for A-Day! A celebration of atheists, agnostics, secular humanists and other nonbelievers.

Atheist Day. But this celebration is different. Rather than getting together with like minded people for a day of food, drink and revelry - instead - this is a day to let others know just how many of us are out there. However, more than a show of numbers - we want to show that we contribute positively to the societies of which we are a part.
Get your friends together and do some community service. Sign up for soup kitchen duty. Plant some trees. Hold a charity bake-sale. Whatever you do, let people know you are both an atheist and a positive contributor. Why should churches get to hog all the fun?
However. If you sign up to work a food bank - put Atheist as your group affiliation. If you pick up trash along the road, wear an Atheist t-shirt. If you donate to a charity, put it in the name of social Atheism. Be creative.
Get together with your friends for some food, drink and revelry.
